In nature, larger animals usually outlive smaller ones (think elephants vs. mice) — but within the dog species it's the opposite. A study analyzing over 70 breeds found that the heavier the body, the shorter the average lifespan. Part of the cause is thought to be a faster aging rate and the strain of rapid growth in large breeds.
At the heart of this is the IGF1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) gene, which controls growth. Research shows small dog breeds tend to have lower blood IGF1 levels, and this lower IGF1 is associated with a longer lifespan — the same mechanism seen across many model organisms, from worms and flies to mice, with traces even in long-lived humans. IGF1 is therefore the most strongly validated gene in the "growth-versus-longevity trade-off."
In cats, the body-size relationship isn't as clear as in dogs, but genetics still matters. A large UK study found that mixed-breed cats (moggies) tend to live longer than purebreds, with a median lifespan of about 14 years — possibly reflecting how "genetic diversity" lowers the risk of inherited diseases that accumulate in purebred lines.
